All
successful architectural firms will, without question, have drawers
full of unbuilt, unrealized, and unexecuted projects. The
reasons that these projects are not built are as numerous as the
projects themselves. Sometimes the owner or sponsor runs out
of money or political resolve. Sometimes federal, state, or
local governmental funds are withdrawn due to budget cut-backs.
Other times, the work is sponsored solely as a study to show how
a particular site or area can be utilized. Still other times,
these projects document the architect's vision of a more idealized
built environment. In fact, there is a long history of Architectural
design exploring utopian ideals.
While
unexecuted work remains a large portion of many firms' portfolios,
it is rarely shown to the public. We, at Bentz/Thompson/Rietow,
Inc. have initiated this section of our website to more fully expose
the work and talents of the firm. These projects are often viewed
as the most interesting work because it is conceived without the constraints
typically imposed on a building project. In some of these studies,
we were allowed to pursue a project of unlimited scope
and budget, often stretching the bounds of technology, form, and
function.
Over
the next few years, we will be "re-discovering" these
projects and bringing them "back to life" for all to view.
Eventually a chronology of these un-built projects,
documenting a significant part of the firms history will be
developed.
On
a regular basis, we will feature un-built projects from the past.
We hope you will enjoy reviewing this work.
