SAINT PAUL ACADEMY AND SUMMIT SCHOOL
St. Paul Academy has recently undertaken several design projects to enhance their facilities including the new Middle School and Summit Center designed in association with Graham Gund Architects and a Dining Hall addition. These projects are part of larger master plan scheduled for completion in 2010.

MAIN LIBRARY - WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY
The new 108,000 square foot "Library of the Future" at Winona State University was designed to accommodate the new and changing technologies of the information age, enabling students to access information in all available formats and media. As patterns of study shift to more group collaboration and cross-disciplinary research, the library will be flexible and adaptive to the unknowns of the future. The $13.5 million library includes the use of computer technology to create interactive learning environments with students or instructors located off-site. Design studies have explored the sightlines, lighting, power and data systems, and design of the control room to provide solutions which will realize this unique program requirement.

NEW MAIN - METROPOLITAN STATE UNIVERSITY
The 59,450 square foot New Main building, completed in 1992, serves as a connecting link between the existing buildings and houses classroom spaces, laboratories, an electronic library and computer labs, as well as student services spaces such as the health center. The building incorporates a 350-seat auditorium serving both the University and the community, along with a grand cafeteria and lounge overlooking downtown. A series of terraces provides a dramatic 180-degree view of the surrounding community, including downtown St. Paul, the Mississippi River and the State Capitol.

NORTH HENNEPIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES BUILDING
This new building provides a major entry for the entire campus. Exterior materials consist of brick, pre-cast concrete panels and standing-seam roofing. Skylights provide day lighting in the spaces for congregation and student services. The new 43,000 square foot facility preserves major pedestrian circulation patterns while providing a congregation place for students, faculty and visitors. The building centralizes application, registration and career counseling services in a highly visible service center. In addition, classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art instructional technologies are conveniently located in the building.

ST. JOHN’S HALL - METROPOLITAN STATE UNIVERSITY
The extensive remodeling and reconstruction of this 40,000 square foot office and classroom facility required that the existing facility, originally designed as a hospital, to be stripped down to its concrete structure. The ensuing reconstruction included the development of an efficient floor plan consisting of offices at the perimeter with support services and conference rooms in the interior portions of the building. The exterior consists of a brick facade with cast stone detailing, energy-efficient windows and a slate roof.

HERITAGE HALL - BETHEL COLLEGE AND SEMINARY
This 270-bed residence hall for Bethel College and Seminary is designed to serve as an upper class dormitory during the school year and a conference center during the summer. The rooms are organized in three-bedroom suites, with the suites on each floor sharing common amenities including kitchens and laundry facilities. The residence hall also will feature a student lounge with a fireplace and computer/study rooms. It is fully air-conditioned for summer use. The residence hall is located near the Campus Life Center to facilitate convenient conference services and has been designed with similar materials to fit the context of this and other neighboring buildings.

NORTH HENNEPIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER
This project consisted of remodeling and expanding an existing library into a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Center. The facility combines traditional library services with technologically-advanced electronic information resources and with a College Learning Center, which integrates programs vital to supporting the academic experience of a growing, diverse community. The project provides a full-service Informational Teaching Systems area with access to a wide range of linked audiovisual equipment and computer service; four fully-equipped A/V classrooms; and group study rooms. A new addition across the north elevation of the building serves as a bridge between the academic support functions and the library.

BETHEL COLLEGE SCIENCE, ART AND TECHNOLOGY BUILDING EXPANSION
This $3.9 million addition to an existing building at Bethel College in St. Paul is part of the campus master plan developed by Bentz / Thompson / Rietow. The project includes 34,000 square feet of new construction and significant remodeling. The addition for the multipurpose academic building includes space for faculty and staff offices, classrooms, computer laboratories and art studios. The building will be ready for occupancy in the fall of 1999.The building includes a general chemistry lab of over 2000 square feet with stations for 46 students, a general biology lab and environmental biology lab, each serving 24 students, and a physical chemistry lab. Storage space for all of these labs is included.

METTEN COURT STUDENT APARTMENTS SAINT JOHN'S UNIVERSITY
The strong modern architecture of the Abbey Church at Saint John's University, designed by Marcel Breuer in the late 1950s, has strongly influenced all of the subsequently built facilities on the campus. This 93-bedroom student housing project responds to the monastic character of the campus architecture by using straightforward building materials and forms. The exterior of the building is masonry and stucco, and pitched roofs provide shelter for the apartment entrances. The plan is arranged using L-shaped units for the first and second floors of the courtyard corners, each unit housing four students. A second unit option is designed as a three-level apartment, also housing four students. The units form a central courtyard shared by the entire facility.

CAMPUS CENTER UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, DULUTH
The Campus Center at the University of Minnesota, Duluth is a multipurpose facility housing instructional, office, and research space for the department of Mathematics and Statistics, the College of Education, Human Services Professions and the Achievement Center. A new approach drive, sky lit circulation areas and a 500-seat concert hall (planned for future construction) are key elements of the new Campus Center program, satisfying departmental needs for additional space and campus-wide needs for improved vehicular access. As both a learning center and the main entrance to the campus, the building connects five campus buildings and functions. A substantial terrace providing landscaping and pedestrian circulation covers the largely underground building. The Campus Center provides advanced instructional technology to all classrooms and offices, demonstrating the University’s commitment to provide high quality, personalized education.

NELSON RESIDENCE HALL - BETHEL COLLEGE AND SEMINARY
This 12,000 square foot addition expands an existing dormitory by adding twelve two-bedroom suites with three beds each, for a total of 72 new beds. The negotiated contract project began construction in the spring and was completed for occupancy in the fall of the same year. The dormitory expansion is one phase of a master plan study completed by the firm which has studied how to accommodate the needs and changes of the campus for the next twenty years. The site, located in Arden Hills, Minnesota, comprises 215 acres.

SUNDIN MUSIC HALL HAMLINE UNIVERSITY

This 339-seat recital hall is located strategically on one of the few remaining sites facing the main campus of Hamline University. The site is adjacent to Drew Residence Hall, from which Sundin draws its scale and context. In addition to a tiered auditorium, the building program includes a dramatic 30-foot tall lobby, reception area, coat room, toilets and a combination rehearsal/green room at the rear of the building. The building is handicapped accessible with a direct connection to the Fine Arts Building, where the Music Department is located.
