Central Lutheran Church Bell Tower

1926 design sketch of south elevation by original architect.         2004 image prior to the start of construction.

In 1925, Sund & Dunham Architects of Minneapolis designed a new church for the Central Lutheran congregation in downtown Minneapolis. Clad entirely in grey limestone (click here to see sample stone carving), the church was built as designed except for the prominent bell tower shown adjacent to the main entrance in the above image. In 2003, funds became available for the design and construction of the long missing bell tower. Bentz/Thompson/Rietow was commissioned to provide the detailed design and construction drawings for the bell tower, based upon the original design. Currently under construction, the bell tower will house a carillon consisting of 47 bells, 5 of which will be large swinging bells and the remaining 42 fixed. The carillon will be capable of being played either from within the tower or remotely from within the church.
