Mount Zion Temple

The two phases of construction at Mount Zion Temple have been a labor of love for the design team (Owner, Architect, Engineers, Owner’ Representative and Contractor) for over five years. In the fall of 1996, the architecture firm was selected to master plan the renovation, remodeling, and revitalization of the facility. This landmark temple, located on historic Summit Avenue in Saint Paul, is one of the last projects designed by the internationally renowned modernist architect Erich Mendelsohn. Mendelsohn died during its construction in 1952. Over the years, various remodeling and two new addition projects were completed, however, none of these projects resolved accessibility issues or the congregation’s need for an additional social hall space to supplement their main social hall. The facility was also sorely in need of a renewal of finishes and new mechanical and electrical systems.

Our firm worked with the congregation’s building committee to identify phased building projects so that the master plan could be enacted over time in an organized manner. The Phase I project started construction in 1997. This phase consisted of:
• Renovation and remodeling of the education wing, library, and administrative offices;
• Provision of an elevator addition to achieve physical accessibility to the second floor;
• Provision of a new social hall through creative restructuring of the existing building;
• Upgrades to the electrical, mechanical and exterior wall systems.                                                                                 ...Next page
