Eden Prairie Library

First Floor Plan
The library is organized around the Reference/Info desk, located on axis with the main entrance and below the center of the barrel vault.  The circulation (service) desk is on the left as a person enters the library, and is the main book drop point from inside the library. The book drop at the service desk is connected directly to the automated materials handling system (AMH) and automatically conveys returned books into the staff work area located behind the service desk. On cross axis, perpendicular with the reference desk, is a zone of reader stations, many of which are intended to be equipped with computers. These two axes act as aids in visually mapping out the library which will make the different areas of the library clear and easy to find for patrons.

Staff work areas are located at the front of the building to provide for convenient deliveries and close association with the service desk and exterior book drops, which also helps minimize the extent and complexity of the AMH. Public meeting rooms are also located at the front of the building to allow for easy access to the meeting rooms from the public lobby, even outside of normal library hours. Individual and small group study rooms are located at the perimeter of the open library area, as are public restrooms and training rooms. The main library floor is basically rectangular in shape and kept open to allow for future flexibility in layout and arrangement of furniture and equipment. The plan is also laid out in such a way as to minimize disruption of the library if it grows into the lease space.
