  Synagogue with an Expansive Nature

The Bet Shalom Synagogue (below) in Minnetonka, Minn., was designed by the firm of Bentz Thompson Rietow of Minneapolis.  It incorporates six 4-ton panels, which form the walls of a hexagonal sanctuary.  The panels glide into the ceiling and floor to double the size of the sanctuary during the High Holy Days, or reduce it to an intimate size for smaller services.

Framed translucent glass panels, which are arranged in a Star of David pattern, are slightly tilted so  there is no flutter echo, sometimes caused by parallel panes of glass in tightly enclosed spaces.  "The spoken word is, of course, very important here," said Gary F. Milne Rojek, the project architect.  Bentz Thompson Rietow is at (612) 332-1234.
